Río Lagartos, a picturesque seashore town on the heart of a protected natural area, one of the natural jewel’s the Yucatán Peninsula has to offer. Its privileged location makes it a perfect starting point for our adventure through some amazing landscapes. Beginning with a boat tour to meet the area’s famous birds like cormorants, pelicans, and seagulls, eagles, and the region’s famous pink flamingos. The latter ones only come to feed and nest here from January to September so you will have to plan accordingly if you want to see them, but we promise that the excursion is worthwhile at any time of the year.
Our boat ride will take us under the Las Coloradas bridge and into the salt pools, one of the area’s most peculiar attractions. Here you’ll find many smaller bodies of water slowly being dried so that the salt can be extracted. During this long process, the water goes through many chemical and biological changes that affect its coloration, ranging from deep greens to electric blues and a bright pink. The mixing of the varied tones of the waters come together with the bluest skies to create an otherworldly landscape. At the end of this part of the tour we will take you to receive a Mayan Bath, a relaxing and rejuvenating treatment that includes covering your skin with naturally exfoliating clay that’s also high in nutrients, incredible for your skin.
After this we will head to an amazing, pristine beach to dip in its crystal clear waters to remove the clay. Also in this beach you’ll find a delicious meal of locally sourced fish and seafood and regional food. Once you are refreshed and your appetite is satiated we’ll head on to explore a natural freshwater spring, a place of great natural beauty, with mangroves growing up to 25 meters tall and filled with life such as birds and reptiles, including the mighty crocodiles of this region.
The last stop of the journey is a cattle ranch, typical of the area where you can experience some of the local custom. The property also has an impressive cenote where you will have some time to swim, relax, and cool down before we make our way back to your hotel.
