Muyil Ruins, a door to Sian Kaan
Date: 23/05/2019Buried in the dense jungles south of Tulum you will find the remains of a less known yet splendid Mayan city: Muyil. Named after the lagoon of the same name next to which the city is located (the site is also known as Chuncyaxché), this site is less visited than it’s northern neighbor Tulum; this makes for a more relaxed visit in a site that only more seasoned travelers get to discover. Here you can walk along its well maintained Mayan roads and visit some of the pyramids that have already been excavated like the great Castle.
This city is one of the oldest Mayan cities with historians dating it to the year 300 B.C.; centuries before other great Mayan cities like Tulum and Chichen Itzá. The city thrived for many years until the arrival of the europeans on the sixteenth century when its inhabitants finally abandoned it.
Door to Sian Ka’an
Muyil is beyond doubt the greatest Mayan site out of the 22 archaeological sites in the Biosphere Reserve of Sian Ka’an. After all, it is the largest and most important of them. Muyil has also a very special reason for you to visit: it’s scenic overlook. After climbing up the stairs of this tower you will ve rewarded with a stunning view the Muyil lagoon and the Biosphere Reserve of Sian Ka’an, a World Heritage Site.
